Barefoot Hoof Care

What Is Barefoot Trimming?

Barefoot trimming is a trimming style that emulates the normal wear of a horse in a natural/wild environment (ie brumby mustang).

Barefoot hooves are designed by nature to expand and contract during each stride. This movement ensures optimum blood flow, lets the heels contribute to shock absorption, and allows natural wear.

Going barefoot successfully is generally a combination of five essential elements:

  1. Trim, & cycle of trim
  2. Diet
  3. Movement
  4. Living environment
  5. Education & commitment of the owner

Research shows that horses in a wild environment develop a strong and low caudal heel, wide frog, and short rounded toes – strong, healthy feet.

The Importance of Well-Cared-For Hooves.

A horse that has regular trimming, will move freely and comfortably.

Hooves that aren’t cared for can result in:

  • lameness
  • thrush
  • seedy toe
  • white-line disease
  • hoof wall cracks
  • abscesses
  • laminitis
  • separation

Our Recommended Trim Cycle

Coulson Equine Services recommends a 4-6 week trim cycle. We encourage all our clients to adhere to this schedule for the health and comfort of their horse.

We have a regular circuit from Tully to Julatten, to accommodate that cycle – just call to arrange your regular barefoot trim, to keep your horse’s hooves in top condition.

Discounted price for our ‘trim- cycle’ customers.

Occasional trim‘ involves reshaping the hoof, cleaning thrush or seedy toe areas, as well as the normal trim. More time is required to get the hooves back into the correct condition and maintain good hoof-health. An assessment of hoof condition is routinely carried out, and advice available to set up future trims.
